P: Did the colorless green ideas sleep furiously?
KT: No, they didn't.
P: So, can I quote you as saying "The colorless green ideas didn't sleep furiously"?
KT: No, that makes no sense.
P: But that's what you said.
KT: But what I meant was that the question makes no sense.
P: But that's not what you said. You said "No, they didn't," as if it were a perfectly well-posed question. Shouldn't you instead have said it was ill-posed or something?
KT: But I answered it in the negative.
P: But that's not the same thing as saying that the question doesn't make sense! Either it makes sense, in which case we try to figure out the answer, or it doesn't make sense, in which case we can't paraphrase this by answering the question in the negative.
KT: Whatever.
P: No, not "whatever."
KT: What do you want me to say?
P: I want you to say what you think, but I'd like for it to be coherent. And when it's not coherent, I'd like for you to sort it out. You keep saying both that they didn't sleep furiously and that it makes no sense to say that they didn't sleep furiously. You keep saying things that you say make no sense. You say "p" AND "'p' is nonsensical." It's frustrating.
KT: Okay.
P: So can I quote you as saying you can't say either "The colorless green ideas sleep furiously." or "The colorless green ideas didn't sleep furiously."?
KT: Sure, that's what I think.
P: Okay... You do know, though, that you're quoted all over the place saying that they didn't, right?
KT: Well, they didn't.
P: They didn't? You mean, "they didn't sleep furiously"?
KT: You know I mean that the question makes no sense.
P: Then why do you keep answering it?
KT: But I'm answering it in the negative!
P: But that's not the same thing as saying it doesn't make sense! You saw that yourself just a minute ago! Don't you want people to stop asking that question -- isn't that what you really mean? You think the question makes no sense! But if you keep answering it, you're acting as if it made sense. People will keep asking it -- asking you it -- because they get an answer from you.
